I am always asked what an interior designer does. Without a very long and technical explanation, it is actually a challenging question. There are such a variety of practitioners out there that it is sometimes quite hard for the general public to differentiate one from another.
The Wikipedia definition of Interior design is the art and science of understanding people's behavior to create functional spaces within a building. Decoration is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things. In short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design.
What I do and how I do it is different than many other interior designers, and certainly different from someone who calls themselves an interior decorator.
Here is one of the best definitions of interior design that I’ve read in a long time: http://www.ncidqexam.org/about-interior-design/definition-of-interior-design/
The bottom line is hire someone you trust who has the appropriate qualifications: education; a varied portfolio of work; references; state and national certifications, who listens to you and with whom you can be honest and direct.
